scrutineering

All parts of the bike are examined by the scrutineer to ensure that the bike is safe to ride. At every ride day the bike will be scrutineered and only then may the rider ride. If your bike has not been scrutineered you are not allowed to ride.

At this time the rider also needs to have his approved helmet, boots, goggles, Armour and gloves with them. The following are some common problems that are picked up by our Scrutineers. These may also help in the maintenance of the bike

v    Plug handle grips – Remove grips and plug handle bars with plugs purchased from a bike shop. Put the grips back on with glue or contact cement. The plugging of handle bars is a necessity, if the rider falls on their handlebars they will not injure themselves.

v    Throttle Return – The throttle must return when turned. If it doesn’t, clean and spray with WD40. By ensuring this works correctly the throttle will not get stuck when the rider attempts to slow down.

v    Front & Rear Brake (Clutch Levers) – All levers must have balls on the end, if not please replace the lever. The lever shouldn’t touch riders fingers when completely engaged.

v    Handlebars should turn from lock to lock without sticking.

v    Fork seals shouldn’t leak oil. If this occurs discuss the problem with your bike shop.

v    Check for loose spokes on front and rear wheels-  If loose tighten evenly all the way around rim with appropriate spanner or shifter.

v    Check footrest returns – If they don’t return, spray with WD40, if this doesn’t solve the problem replace return spring.

v    Check wheel bearings and swing arm for wear (sideways movements). – Replace worn parts.

v    Ensure kill switch works.

v    Remove the stand from your bike.
